The Great Expectations Basket

POSTED BY Liliana Piazza ON October 15, 2014

As the months pass by it is clear that new and exciting things are happening at the Bagelshop.  That yes indeed, we are ‘growing’ the family business, and there is one more bagel in the oven.  If you have popped in the store my condition is quite obvious at this point, and I’m happy to announce that we’ll be expecting our second baby in January!

To celebrate yet another bagel baby, I’ve decided to put together our ‘Great Expectations’ Basket – which will be a great gift for any expecting mom.

We often have customers looking for a congratulatory treat for that special mom-to-be that’s more original  than ice cream and a jar of pickles (although very delicious) – and so out of the 8000 products in our inventory I hand-picked my favourite items for this basket.

gin gins

These tasty ginger candies are fantastic any-day for the ginger lover, but when you’re feeling queasy or nauseous, the natural tummy-taming properties of ginger can offer some welcome relief.  Be warned that they have a very strong ginger taste, but they have a lovely chewy texture, and a sweet and spicy kick.

Get Maternal Tea by Republic of Tea

There are so many herbal teas that have warnings “not recommended for pregnant and lactating women”.  Thankfully Republic of Tea has come to the rescue and created a special blend just for mama’s.

Enjoy a cup of this lovely caffeine-free herbal blend, based on organic rooibos. They’ve added raspberry leaf, nettles and alfalfa. Parsley fights water retention and a snap of ginger staves off nausea.  A lovely way to feel pampered and special.

G.H. Cretors Chicago Mix

chicago mix

This product is by far my favourite.  There are very few health or nutritional benefits to Chicago mix, but if you bring this treat to a pregnant lady she will be so grateful. The sweet and salty mix of excellent caramel corn and aged cheddar cheese corn is the perfect snack, and will chase away any pregnancy woe! This caramel/cheese popcorn combination has been a long-held secret in Chicago – but thankfully they decided to share it with the rest of us.  The only problem with this product is that no one wants to share – it’s recommended that you buy your own bag too.

Black-Strap Molasses

Black-Strap Molasses is a great source of iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, potassium, vitamin B6, and selenium – so it’s no wonder that it’s considered a pregnancy super-food.  Many women suffer from iron-deficiency later in pregnancy, so it’s nice to offer something that may help to keep iron levels up.  It is very much an acquired taste, however.  I have heard of people using it to sweeten oatmeal or smoothies, or even incorporating it into savory meat dishes.  Personally I find the taste a little strong, so I prefer to use it in cookie dough. Hey, any excuse to eat cookies sounds pretty good to me.  To make your introduction to black-strap molasses a little easier – we will be including a molasses-ginger recipe in the basket.

To welcome baby into the world, we will be including a coupon for a free dozen teething bagels.  We have been making our all-nautral teething bagel for nearly 30 years, and there have been plenty of babies over the years who love to chew on our sweet and hard tiny bagels that are perfect for tiny hands.

As always we love seeing families young and old here at the Bagelshop and the fact that we have so many bagel babies makes me very proud.  We are thrilled that we are very stroller friendly, child-friendly, and nursing friendly.  So many new mothers feel comfy on our couches and chairs – to enjoy a sandwich or coffee when baby is sleeping.
