2013 what a year you’ve been!

2013 in review!

Well it looks like another year has come and gone, and I’m proud to say that so much has happened here at the Bagelshop.  It’s pretty neat having a business, as it’s truly an organism all to itself.  With ups and downs, headaches, and triumphs, sometimes it’s a complete monster, and other times a comfy home.  Needless to say, it’s never boring.  This was our 29th year in business and that in itself is an accomplishment!  Here are a few of the exciting highlights from this amazing 29th year…

 A new website and Social Media!

The Ottawa Bagelshop has been on the world wide web since the early 2000‘s.  However, as of late, our website needed a little rejuvenation.  With the great guys from Innovanet Solutions, we worked hard on creating a site that includes up to date photos, menus, products, as well as this here blog!  We also have been much more active on social media, including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.  We’ve learned that it’s a fun way to connect to our community and customers – and hope to continue to spread the news about specials, promotions, and special events being held at the store!  In 2014, we’re launching online coupons, so it’ll be worth it to check it out.

 A Green Initiative is BORN!

At long last, the Bagelshop started a recycling programme within our restaurant and store.  We happily recycle all of our drink containers, newspapers, and so MANY cardboard boxes.  We introduced biodegradable take out containers, and are striving to reduce food waste whenever it’s possible.  We strive to reduce our energy consumption by shutting off the lights, and we try to not let the water run.  We bought some new fridges that are far more energy efficient, and we continue to replace our older fridges when we can.  Of course our bagels are baked in a wood-burning oven, using a renewable resource! We’re really happy to continue our green initiative at the store, with more aspirations for 2014 including installing more energy-efficient lighting, and fine-tweaking our recycling programme to be even more conscientious and effective.

In 2013 we introduced three new bagel flavours: Everything, Rosemary, and 9-Grain whole wheat.  We are so pleased that all three have been a huge hit with our customers, and we continue to try and keep up with demand.  We still have our tried and true favourites, but we felt it was time to keep things updated.

It’s with great pride that we were able to raise nearly $500 for CHEO in the month of December.  By hosting fantastic carolers through Capital City Opera on two Sundays around lunch – customers were generous as they were entertained and filled with holiday spirit by enjoying great music making.

In the early evening of Dec 10 we had 25 kids and their parents join us for the first-ever annual Decorate a Bagel for CHEO!  Armed with paint, sparkles, googling eyes, stickers and more, these little bagel-artistes created some great ornaments for their tree and ours.  Everyone enjoyed a snack of bagels and hot chocolate, and we were so happy that the event was a success.  Cheo the Bear came out to say hello and all the kids were happy to give hugs and high fives! Thank you so much to all the parents who joined us for our very first go at this event – we are pleased to announce that it will most definitely return in December 2014.
